Stretch-In & Glue-Down Systems
Carpet

Carpet

Stretch-in carpet uses a tack strip perimeter system and is the standard residential installation. Glue-down is preferred for commercial spaces, stairs, and areas where dimensional stability is critical. We assess and recommend the right system for every job.

How It Works

Tack strips are fastened around the room perimeter. Padding is installed and stapled. Carpet is cut, stretched tightly over the tacks using a power stretcher, then tucked at all edges. Seams are joined with heat tape.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stretch-in and glue-down carpet installation?

Stretch-in carpet is attached to tack strips around the room's perimeter and stretched tightly over a separate cushion underpad. It's the standard residential method and easy to replace. Glue-down carpet is bonded directly to the subfloor with adhesive and is used in commercial spaces or where dimensional stability is critical (stairs, high-traffic areas).

How long does carpet installation take?

Most residential rooms can be carpeted in a single day. A full basement or multi-room carpet project typically takes 1–2 days. We move furniture as part of the service and coordinate room-by-room so you're never entirely displaced.

What carpet pad thickness is best?

For standard residential use, a 7/16" pad with 6 lb density is a common sweet spot: enough cushion without feeling too soft underfoot. High-traffic areas benefit from firmer, denser pads. On stairs, thinner pads (3/8" or less) are preferred for a tighter, safer fit.

Can carpet be installed over existing hardwood?

Yes. Carpet can be installed directly over hardwood. Tack strips are nailed into the subfloor through the hardwood, and the carpet stretches over the pad. The hardwood is preserved underneath and can be uncovered later if desired.
