Herringbone / Chevron / Custom Patterns
Expert installation and craftsmanship, serving the GTA & Ottawa.

Pattern floors require a different level of skill and planning. We install herringbone, chevron, Versailles, and fully custom hardwood patterns using glue-down technique on prepared substrates. Every angle is calculated, every joint tight.
Pattern installation starts with a detailed layout drawing. The subfloor is leveled and primed, then boards are laid one by one with full-spread adhesive. We sand, stain, and finish on-site after the glue cures.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much more does a herringbone or chevron floor cost compared to a standard install?
Pattern installs typically run 30-50% more in labour than a straight-lay floor of the same material. The extra cost comes from the precise angle cutting, slower installation pace, and higher waste factor in the wood. Material costs are the same - the premium is in the craftsmanship.
What subfloor condition is needed for a herringbone install?
Pattern floors are installed glue-down, so the subfloor needs to be concrete or a very solid plywood with no flex or movement. Flatness is critical - we require the substrate to be within 3/16" over 10 feet. We assess and prep the subfloor before any pattern work begins.
How long does a herringbone floor installation take?
A herringbone or chevron install takes roughly twice as long as a standard straight-lay floor. A 300-400 sq ft room can take 3-4 days for installation alone, plus 1-2 days for sanding and finishing. We plan layout carefully at the start to avoid any mid-project surprises.
Can a herringbone hardwood floor be sanded and refinished later?
Yes - as long as the wood species has enough wear layer thickness, it can be sanded and refinished like any other hardwood floor. The pattern stays intact because sanding is done flat across the entire surface, not along the grain of individual boards.
